Basic principle

windingshafts.com friction shafts

Air differential shafts slip internally to accommodate multiple width rolls on one shaft. Always custom made, the shafts expand for a precision fit and are available in several designs and mounting styles

You can run multiple rolls on one run and still get the tension equalization that you need for a good quality output. The elements used may differ from each other but basically do the same: accommodate a controlled grip / slip. The differential shaft must be driven at a 3 – 10% over speed at all times, all the elements rings need to slip continuously.

As the roll diameters build, the differential shaft rpm must decrease to maintain the same over speed, and the air pressure usually increases to maintain the same tension.

Most common friction rings operates one direction, some have double row balls and operate BI-directional. This allows the operator to continu in a reversed winding direction without changing position of rings, meaning less down time and fast and simple core loading.
